Meet the Team - our Family and our Crew
Officially we’ve been in business since 1996. Unofficially we’ve been doing this since Jonathan was 9 and started pushing a mower in Blackland Ridge with his best friend.
After graduating from Walton High School, Jonathan earned a degree in Landscape & Grounds Management from the University of Georgia. He studied under world-renowned horticulturists, and was instructed on plant identification, landscape disease and pest management, environmental factors affecting landscapes, and landscape and nursery management.
His experiences in Athens include working in the greenhouses and trial gardens at UGA, which involved learning every aspect of growing and managing plants, as well as testing new plants for the Southeastern market. He also met an outspoken English major while he was there, and 14 years and 2 children later, they’re still having a blast!
Not only is Jonathan a nice guy, but he actually knows his stuff. He has his Pesticide Applicator’s License and Turfgrass Management Certification. He is also certified by the GA Soil & Water Conservation Commission and the Interlocking Concrete Paver Institute. He is a Georgia Certified Landscape Professional, as well as a Belgard Certified Contractor.
In his spare time (yeah, right!) he is a father, husband, coach, carpenter, and ultra-marathon runner. He’s traveled to Oregon, North Carolina, Alabama, and Kentucky for these crazy races, and he’s got the belt buckles to prove it!
Jonathan’s wife, Jennifer, joined the company in the fall of 2012, although she’s been involved (behind the scenes) since the company’s beginning. Her approach to the business is a bit more out of the box than Jonathan’s, and she uses her background in freelance writing & marketing to create stronger customer relationships and to encourage constant conversations between our team and our clients.
Jennifer grew up in the country and learned about plants and flowers from her mother. She grows a mean garden, makes pickles & jam, and would really rather be living on a farm somewhere. Apart from working in the office, she is also the family chauffeur, PTA Secretary, trail runner, gardener, homework guru, and everything else in between!
Jonathan’s primary focus as owner of Team Turf has been to create a small business culture that delivers big-company results. He’s accessible, present, and involved in every step of the process — unless he’s out running another 100-mile race! He certainly likes a challenge, and his work ethic and high standards are a big part of who we are as a company.
Marketing and Communications
Jen manages much of the behind-the-scenes work at Team Turf (the non-glamourous stuff). One of her favorite parts of the job, though, is talking to customers. She loves learning new faces and making connections. The best part? Being on the receiving end of a call from a customer with nothing but good things to say about our crews, our work, or our process!
We came across Austin when he was working at John Deere Landscapes, and were immediately smitten! He’s got a solid background as a Horticulture/Landscape Specialist, and he’s probably one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. He organizes & oversees the various crews and projects each day, and his practical knowledge base and southern charm has made him an invaluable part of the company.
Most of our employees have been with us for a long time. They’ve witnessed (and been a large part of) the company’s growth, they’ve watched our children grow, and we’re proud that they’ve chosen to make Team Turf part of their own family!
